Lindy Carol

Blue
by Lindy Carol

There is a time
Oh so beautiful
As brief
As the infancy
Of a wee baby

When the Heavens
Are
Colored
The perfection
Of Blue

It comes
At the birth
Of night
After
Sweet Sunset
Just before Moonglow
Announced
By the Heralding
Of wind chime melodies
The call
Of a lovers heart
Soft coo of a Dove
And the
Hush
Of an angels wing
Flying overhead
To Draw
Your Attention
To the sky
To this colored perfection
Of Blue

How to describe it
I cannot say
For I only know
With certainty
This color
This blue
Is a mixture
Holding the essence
Of a small boy's
Favorite marble
Held between
A grubby thumb
And index finger
As his mother calls
"Time for dinner”

It holds the aura
Of a Birthday candles' flame
Just
Before your wish
And the shade
Of blue plastic beads
Won at a Carnival
For a first love

It is the Periwinkle
Tear
That flows down the face
Of a Sea Captain's Widow
And
The azure note
Played by A
Jazz Man's
Trumpet
On
Bourbon Street

It is the cornflower
Ribbon
That tenderly holds
A lock of hair
And the simple blue
Of a crayon
Held tightly
In a five year old's
Hand

As a tongue
Pokes out the corner
Of a wee mouth

It is the Sapphire
Of a broken bit
Of glass
Found
On a moss covered path
Leading
To nowhere
And the navy
From the button
Of your Grandfather's coat

And one
Dear Evening
when all
Is mixed
With proper care
The color
Comes
To deliver
A Promise and lift
Your soul
For a Brief glimpse
Of home

SECOND PLACE WINNER

Ignorance
by Dr. Niama L. Williams

what force am i?
what gale, hail, thunderclap precedes my presence?
i tear souls
leave vacuums that conjure madness
what force am i?
i go on
mindless
thinking nothing of myself
a force unreckoned
unnoticed
by she who wields it in absentia.

is it my scent?
my generosity?
all i want
to leave
quickly
without causing pain

the blankness of enriqueta's eyes
shell distraught and unspeaking
the moments of silence when i tell the next good friend why

no joy, relief at my going
one well wisher, maybe two
but all with a tinge of sadness
not many willing to explore the depths of their grief
it simply plain, on their faces.

i don't want control of the weather
have no love for the making of grieving hearts
i want to go dancing
the sun out
Mama smiling, for once,
as i catch the plane to Philly
new destiny, advisor,
waiting.

THIRD PLACE WINNER

Ruminations
by Catherine Sullivan

I am the sun peeking over the horizon.
I am the song in the holly.

I am the lace of cloud in the sky.
I am the beetle on a twig and the scent of rose, lemon and lavender.

I am the indigo behind your eyes when you seek me in silence.
I am the peace that floods you after our time together.

FOURTH PLACE WINNER

Night Sky
by Carol Moore

I lifted back my shoulders
to look at the night sky
streams of gossamer clouds
silver white with golden tinges
flying by the startling white moon
clear black sky
shimmering stars
I found I was holding my breath
in awe of the beauty of life
