Dear Marney,
How do I go about finding a publisher or agent to publish my book?

Dear Reader:
A big book called The Writers Market is the definitive resource for finding both publishers and agents for all genres. While most writers are aware of The Writers Market, what you may not know is that it is now available not only as a printed resource book, but also as an online Web site resource that can help you search for publishers and agents and organize every part of your publication journey, from searches, to sending query letters, to accepting proposals. The last time we checked it, was around $30 for a yearly fee, or you could go one month at a time for $3.99. Once you join, you can search by genre to find a short list of agents and/or publishers to whom to send your current book (or proposals for future projects). More important than getting the contact information for these individuals is getting their requests and requirements for queries and proposals. The Writers Market tells you exactly what information they want when they receive a query or proposal. It's an invaluable resource as you try to maximize your chances of getting your work seen and reviewed by quality people who appropriate matches for what you do. Access it at http://www.thewritersmarket.com.

Besides using the search engines in The Writers Market, another way to find a publisher or agent is to find books that are similar to yours, and look to see who the publishers and agents are for those books. Authors often thank the agents and book editors by name in the introductions. Then, with those names in hand, you can refer to The Writers Market book, or to www.thewritersmarket.com, to get the mailing address and see if that person is still listed as a contact at that company. If the person is not listed, you should call to see if he or she is still employed there.
