In our life there is a single color, as on an artist's palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love."

– Marc Chagall

You've probably heard about "The Law of Attraction", popularized in "The Secret" movie and book a few years ago.  It generally refers to the concept of focusing on what you want, in order to get it.  In the teleclass I presented this past Thursday, "The Awe of Attraction", we explored the exciting nuances of a slight modification: instead of focusing on what you want (which automatically puts you in a mindset of lacking something), focus on what you LOVE.

One thing that I have found difficult about simply, generically "focusing on what you want" is that it then becomes all-too-easy to lose sight of what we already have.  Focusing on what we want automatically puts a subconscious focus on what is missing, rather than what is already here, available, and plentiful.  Creative, regular practices of gratitude are so helpful because they remind us what IS working in our lives.  And, whether we know it or not, love is a natural force that is working in all of us.  It's pretty amazing when you think about it; we all naturally have the capacity to love, sometimes even in spite of our own human cynicism. We don't have to study or learn how to do anything.  We just have to open our hearts.  My goal for this teleclass was to use creativity as the conduit for sharing the ways that we can harness and use that love and over 1,000 people signed up to join and explore with me, so it was truly, a love fest! :-)

One of the lessons I presented in Thursday's class involved using the metaphor of the kaleidoscope to explain the power of love.  In a kaleidoscope, when we focus on a single object, the image magically expands into a dazzling infinity of patterns and colors, instantly changing our capacity to SEE.  And when we love, our capacity to LIVE suddenly expands in infinite ways.

When my little son Kai looks through what he calls his "kaMYdasope"– he gets so excited because the view is so new and surprising, and a bit silly.  The loves of our lives can be surprising, too.  We can find them in places where we might not expect them...and yes, they might even be a bit silly.   (In the class, I shared a story of finding love while waiting in line at the pharmacy when their computer was jammed).

Thursday's group did some amazing artsy archeological digging to find some of those hidden gems, and then we expressed them in an ARTsignment™ art project, called a Ka-LOVE-ascope.   While everyone was working on their projects, I was reminded of something I read once: that every person's heartbeat is slightly different (much like our fingerprints are, although obviously more subtle).  I realized that as we were all gathered together on the phone, literally from all corners of the world, all creating our own interpretation of this ARTsignment™…I could almost hear our hearts beating, in the most beautiful symphony of love and creation.  I can't imagine a grander work of art than that…painted with the single color of love.

For today's "In the Studio" Interview, I'm delighted to present an interview with Certified ARTbundance™ Coach Sandi Wedemeier.

Sandi has embraced the ARTbundance™ into all facets of her life (she's even created jewelry designed around the ARTbundance™ Principles!)  She's a compassionate, dynamic soul with a heart full of pure, colorful love.  I know you will enjoy getting to know Sandi!

Artella: How has your ARTbundance™ training affected your work and/or life?

Sandi: Happily, ARTbundance has seeped into every aspect of my life. It's difficult sometimes to put it into words, but when I understood and embraced the 9 Principles, they really did become my internal guidance system, a compass if you will. I become more and more aware of which principles are active in my life and which need more work on my part. I can even see where my blocks are by which principle is not currently active for me. The amazing thing is that any problem can be approached using the ARTbundance principles. It's really been humbling to witness the changes in my own life and the lives of others as result of ARTbundance training.

Artella: ARTbundance™ Coaching is based on nine ARTbundance™ Principles.  Do you have a favorite Principle, or one that you really enjoy activating in other people?  Which one, and why?

Sandi: Vision, followed by vision, with a little vision thrown in! By far, it's my favorite Principle to work with personally and it's the foundation of my coaching. You wouldn't leave on a 1200 mile car trip without a map, so why would you try to transform your life without having an idea where you are going. Vision lays the groundwork and once the groundwork is there, it's much easier to see the path. I love working with others through this stage because vision is really fun. You get to dream and you get to wish. You get to revisit all the things you've loved to do in your life and you get to imagine doing what makes your heart sing. You get to see what things have interested you through your whole life and you get to see how it all might come together. We work together with this vision to create the tools you need to make this transformation and then...you get to emerge into the life you've always wanted to live!

We are now accepting applications for the Fall 2010 ARTbundance™ Coach Certification Program, which is beginning in November 2010. You can get full details and request an application, here.

One of the lessons in the Artella e-course, "Mixed Media ME-flections: 30 Self-Portrait Projects to Change Your Life" is called "Look at Love", and it guides you through creating a self-portrait that represents four different kinds of love in your life.  My example is above; I created four mixed-media collages on postcard-sized pieces of plywood, strung together on a necklace.

I encourage you to create your "Look at Love", using the creative media of your choice (i.e., painting, collage, drawing, mixed-media, or perhaps writing short poems or mini-essays).  If you like, you can follow this as a guide:

Section 1: Represents a person you love.
Pick someone you love - it can be anyone that comes to mind - and use this section to illustrate that love.

Section 2: Represents the love you receive.
You can interpret this however you like; you may want to illustrate love you receive from a particular person, or it could be symbolic of the love you receive from others, in general.

Section 3: Represents an object you love.
Go to this section and create art that represents something you love.    Whatever comes to mind first is perfect!

Section 4: Represents something you love about yourself.
In this section, include an image of yourself (photo, drawing, etc.) and illustrate something you love about yourself.

As you work, really allow yourself to feel each of these important kinds of love in your body.  Breathe the love in and out.  Feel the love in your fingertips, and, by extension, in the paints and papers you're working with.  Experience the depth of all the love you have to give and receive in your life, though love.

If you like, you can learn more about Mixed Media ME-flections: 30 Self-Portrait Projects to Change Your Life, here!
